What the German health certificate is

The initial instructions (Erstbelehrung) according to §43 of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG), also called health certificate (Gesundheitszeugnis), health pass (Gesundheitspass) or red card (Rote Karte), are aimed at people who handle food professionally, e.g. people working in restaurants, bakeries, but also community facilities such as schools or hospitals. The initial training provides information on hygiene rules and how to deal with infectious diseases such as salmonella or hepatitis A in order to prevent the spread of diseases. Participants learn how to minimize the risk of infection in their daily work and how to recognize and report symptoms of illness so as not to endanger others. The training is mandatory and is carried out by the local ministry of health (Gesundheitsamt) in your city or a doctor authorized by the public health authorities. After attending you will receive a certificate, which is required for your job. The follow-up instructions (Folgebelehrung) are usually carried out by the employer and must be refreshed every 2 years.

How to get a health certificate in Germany

According to the law, the instructions must be given in oral and in written form. You can do the training at the public health authority in your city or by an authorized doctor. At Testhelp24, we work with authorized doctors to provide you a convenient online training. The instructions are divided into 3 simple steps: First you watch a video. You then receive a written instruction leaflet. In the final step you do a multiple-choice quiz. The quiz can be repeated if necessary until it is passed. As soon as you have passed the quiz, you will immediately receive your health certificate as a PDF by email.

Who needs the health certificate / the red card: Kitchen staff, restaurant workers, and others

All people working with food professionally must present a health certificate in accordance with §43 IfSG when starting a job. This includes restaurants (chefs, kitchen staff, waiters, bartenders, etc.), food production and processing (bakeries, butchers, etc.), catering, food suppliers, but also communal facilities such as hospitals, schools or kindergartens. If you buy and process food privately, you obviously do not need to be instructed.

Who does the instruction

The local health authorities handle the legally required oral and written instruction differently. Some do it in person, others show a video, all hand out a written information sheet. Testhelp24 has created a video together with the doctor approved by the health authority that briefly and simply explains everything you need to know. This allows you to complete the instruction at any time without the need for a personal appointment.

How long the certificate according to § 43 IfSG is valid for

The initial instruction for the health certificate is valid forever and across all of Germany. However, you need to start your job within 3 months of the initial instruction. Let your employer confirm your job start date on the health certificate to be on the safe side.

Who gets the training certificate

The health certificate belongs to you. Your employer must be able to produce the certificate at the request of the authorities. Therefore, please hand over the paper to your employer when you start your job. Ask for the certificate back when you leave your job.

What the follow-up infection protection instructions are about

The employer has to carry out and document follow-up training when you start your job and every 2 years thereafter. This ensures that you continuously refresh your knowledge of hygiene, infection protection and the ban on working with certain symptoms and illnesses. Your employer will therefore come to you when the time comes. If you are unsure, ask your employer about the follow-up instruction.

How much a health certificate costs in Germany

The cost for the initial instructions depends on the fee schedule of the Gesundheitsamt (local ministry of health) at your place of residence. The fees are usually between 20-40 euros and have to be paid by the course particpant. At Testhelp24 the course is free of charge, the official certificate costs 28 Euro. Our tip: Ask your employer for reimbursement.

How you pay for the certificate

At Testhelp24 the instruction course is free of charge. You only pay for the official certificate when you have passed the course. You can pay conveniently by Paypal, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The person paying does not have to be the course participant - for example, you can also purchase the certificate for a friend without their own online payment option.
